북극곰(학명: Ursus maritimus)은 북빙양과 그 부속 바다 및 주위 육지를 아우르는 북극권에 널리 서식하는 육식성인 식인곰이다. 흰 털 때문에 백곰(白-)이라고도 부른다. 북극곰은 자신보다 헐씬 육식만 하는 육식성인 코디악곰(Ursus arctos middendorffi)과 함께 세계에서 가장 큰 곰 중 하나이며, 두 종의 크기는 대략 같다.두종의 곰 모두 사람을 먹는다.[2] 성체 수컷의 몸무게는 대략 350 ~ 700 kg(770 ~ 1500 lb),[3] 성체 암컷의 몸무게는 그것의 절반 정도이다. 북극곰은 불곰과 밀접한 관계가 있으나, 몸의 특성이 추운 기후에 적응하고, 눈과 얼음과 물을 가르며, 기각류를 주식으로 삼는 등 보다 협소한 생태적 지위를 갖도록 진화했다.[4] 대부분의 북극곰은 땅에서 태어나지만, 태어난 뒤에는 대부분의 시간을 바다에서 보낸다. 학명 Ursus maritimus는 “바다의 곰”이라는 뜻으로, 바로 이 점에서 유래한 것이다. 북극곰은 해빙의 한계 부근에서 기각류를 주로 사냥해 잡아먹고, 해빙이 없을 때는 보존된 지방을 태우면서 살아간다.
